On a Bright Note

August 4, 2015

I believe in destiny.  Some things happen for good reasons.  Over the years, I’ve experienced quite a few blessings in disguise.

Yesterday, I was supposed to be on my way to Alaska with my mom for a week to celebrate her birthday.  Instead, I stayed in Washington and went to my first occupational therapy session.  I’ve never been to any sort of therapy in my life.  This was one of the hardest things I’ve ever had to do.

My therapist is a vibrant and positive young woman with passion for her job.  At first, I couldn’t do anything she asked me to do.  And I felt intense pain when she tried to manipulate my hand… But I knew instantly that I was in good hands (literally)…. her hands.

One month ago, on my way to a rehearsal, I was in a car accident that shattered my left hand.  The injury required surgery and my doctor told me I would not be able to play the violin for the foreseeable future.

I was broken physically as well as mentally.

For a violinist, a hand injury often ends your career.  I’ve been playing the violin since I was five. The kind of passion I’ve developed for music cannot disappear overnight. I hadn’t been able to do anything but mope around since the accident.  But today I saw photos from Alaska taken by my mom’s friend (who took my spot!).  My spirits were lifted.

Mind and body are closely connected. You function properly only when the two are in harmony.  Below are some of my favorite photos from Alaska that inspired me to find something positive in my personal situation.

I’m forced to take an indefinite break from my profession and possibly look for another career.  We’ll see how my therapy goes and how my hand heals.

On a brighter note, I can focus on Culture Saves full-time to use the arts to bring people together while my mind and body work to restore my own harmony…
